How to Tell If the Steering Play Comes From the Rack

Noticing that the steering feels loose right around the center even though the tie rods and ends seem fine? That little “dead spot” before the wheels actually respond is a classic sign that the rack is starting to wear out. On smooth roads the car suddenly needs tiny corrections just to stay straight, and every small bump sends a muted thump through the wheel — not a sharp click, but a heavier knock that feels like it’s coming from inside the rack itself.

Another clue is inconsistent steering effort. When you’re parking, the wheel might feel light for a moment and then suddenly get stiff, something worn tie‑rod ends don’t usually cause. If you notice damp rack boots or oil on the subframe, that’s an even stronger indicator. When all these symptoms show up together, the steering rack is almost always the real issue, not the outer components.
